About Leicester
Leicester is one of Britain's oldest cities, supposedly founded by the legendary King Leir over 2,000 years ago.
As the largest city in the East Midlands, and drawing on a diverse cultural heritage, Leicester provides a unique shopping experience. It is justly famous for its 'Golden Mile' of Indian restaurants and shops, and is home to Europe's largest covered market. As well as the high street stores and shopping centres found in any major city, Leicester also has a rich collection of independent shops within its shopping arcades.
Leicester is also famous as home to the National Space Centre, the origin of the Thomas Cook package holiday, as well as a wide range of sporting successes in rugby, football, and cricket. It is also home to De Montfort University and the University of Leicester.
